The consumer unit (or fuse board) is often one of the first things people think of with talk of electricity. They can be a conceptually simple collection of fuse wire or they can include additional protection. As long as your wiring is to an acceptable standard we can fit a new consumer unit for you. What type we fit depends on what you need and desire, but as a typical example we usually fit a split load unit. This includes a residual current device that detects any fault to earth and shuts off the power - quickly. This affords even greater protection for you and your family than that of a fuse or circuit breaker alone (and they are by no means sub standard in themselves). The beauty of a split load unit is that only part of the installation is connected to the RCD, such as sockets, and those that are less likely to benefit from the additional protection, such as lighting, are connected to a fuse only. This means that in the event of the RCD tripping the lights will stay on - this is particularly useful if such a thing were to happen during the hours of darkness.
Please be advised that the differing requirments of the 17th edition of the wiring regulations means that all circuits may be protected by RCDs. This section will soon be updated to reflect these changes.
